Night of the Creeps (1986) Requested by Clint

In 1959, a college couple making out near campus see an object fall from the sky and decide to check it out.  Little do they know, it is a strange alien experiment.  They drive to the spot of the crash and as the guy goes into the woods to check it out, and escaped mental patient kills the girl with an axe; things don’t go so well for the guy either as an alien slug jumps into his mouth.  We cut to present day and find two nerds, one of whom is a gimp (J.C.) and the other a hopeless romantic (Chris); all they want is to get laid.  Chris falls for some sorority bimbo named Cynthia who looks like she could play linebacker for the football team, and thinks the only way he can land trim like that is to join a fraternity.  The dweebs decide to rush the girl’s boyfriend’s frat and they have a little job for them – steal a body from the campus morgue.  As they sneak in to the morgue (which has a security code of a whole two numbers), they find a frozen body: our college boy from 1959.  They release him from his freezer and end up getting scared off and run away.

All hell breaks loose as the alien slugs inside this guy begin to multiply and spread across campus.  Big tough guy cop Detective Cameron (Tom Atkins) is on the case and doesn’t believe all of this hog wash shit about alien slugs.  That is until the axe murder that killed his ex-girlfiend returns from the dead thanks to a slug infestation.  As student after student are turned into zombies, Chris, Cynthia and the detective go on a mission to kick some ass and blow shit up.  All of their efforts are for not though, as several slugs escape into a local cemetery.  Duh, duh… duuuuuhhhh!

Alex’s Thoughts:  I know a lot of people enjoy this movie.  I enjoyed it the first time I saw it, but unfortunately that was a long time ago, and frankly once was enough for me.  There is enough going on to hold your attention, barely; but sometimes it is just the cheesyness factor that keeps you holding on.  I just couldn’t take Rusty from European Vacation as any sort of badass ladies man, even equipped with a flamethrower he is still a spaz.  Tom Atkins is always fun to watch and I constantly waited for his phone to ring so he could spout off his catchphrase ‘Thrill Me” every time he answered, but that was the highlight for me.  Bad acting and bad effects just couldn’t overcome the somewhat interesting story; maybe if there were more rotting corpses like the ax murder it would have been a bit better. If you want to see a good movie about killer space slugs you should watch Slither instead. Alex Rates This Movie 4/10

Tim’s Thoughts: Sorry Alex, you are waaaayyyy wrong! Night of the Creeps is a great Homage to not only classic horror movies, but it even gives some love to its contemporaries (at the time). Just look at the names of the characters, Romero, Cronenberg, Carpenter, Hooper, Cameron, Miner, Landis, and even Raimi. The astute eye will even catch a Monster Squad reference, as it’s written on a bathroom wall, (same director).  We haven’t even gotten into the multiple Plan Nine from Outer Space references. So watch this not expecting an actual scary movie, but as a tongue in cheek, loving dedication to great movies that came before it, and I almost forgot, the College is named “Corman” University. Almost as great as monster squad, so if you liked that, I say check this out, but have the right frame of mind. Tim Rates This Movie 10/10

“Oh my God, oh my God, oh my God, oh my God, oh my God, oh my God! Do you think it’s taking the Lord’s name in vain to say “oh my God” a whole bunch of times really fast like that? “
