Gremlins 2: The New Batch

Release Date: 6/15/1990 – Rated PG-13

Starring: Phoebe Cates (Fast Times At Ridgemont High)

Plot Summary:  Gizmo’s ‘dad’ (the old Chinese guy from the first movie) has died, and the store in which he resides is being demolished to make way for a new China Town center by mogul developer Daniel Clamp.  A guy nabs Giz in an alley and takes him back to the Splice O’ Life, a genetics lab located in the new mega office building that is also owned by Clamp. Also working in the building are Billy and Kate, returning from the original film.  Billy learns Gizmo is in the building, kidnaps him, and takes him back to his desk when he has to leave him until Kate can pick him up after work.  Before she can get there a janitor (Gomez Addams) causes a water fountain accident and gets Gizmo wet, and that is never good.  We now have our new batch of mogwais – a super hyper one, a tough guy, and semi-retarded one and a new stripe.

Kate picks up the hyper one, thinking it’s Gizmo and takes him home to Billy, who quickly realizes this are not going well.  The mogwais in the office building find some snacks and before you know it are full-blown gremlins.  After starting a fire and activating the sprinkler system, the few gremlins are now hundreds of gremlins.  Billy and Kate return to the building to find it going haywire with both gremlins and people running about.   Things really get crazy when the gremlins get into the chemicals at the genetics lab; transforming them into bizarre hybrids; such as bats, vegetables, females and spiders.  It is up to the few remaining people in the building to figure out how to stop the horde of little monsters from escaping into New York city before the sun sets.

Alex’s Thoughts:  Is it wrong that I love this movie so much?  It isn’t one of those that I could watch every six months and still like it, but once in a while is perfect.  This movie is hokey and corny, but it doesn’t try to be otherwise.  They make fun of the movie (as well as the original, with the damn movie itself; they know what they’re making – a schlocky sequel, and it’s perfect.  They don’t try to one-up the first movie, as most sequels do; they knew they weren’t going to do that, they just make a fun movie.  All of the different gremlins created by the genetics lab, as well as all of the funny announcements in the Clamp building just make this one of my favorites.

Tim’s Thoughts: I like most of this movie, and to be fair I liked it enough to buy it, but I am such a huge fan of the original that I couldn’t help be just a little let down. The new and mutated gremlins are great, and I love Gizmo with his little headband and his paperclip/match bow and arrow combo. Plus again CHRISTOPHER LEE!!! So anyways if you have a night to spare, you should give it a watch. If you haven’t seen the first one, watch it first.

Final Thoughts:  This is one of those rare sequels that we really like.  Not because it’s better than the first one, but because it tries to be its own movie and succeeds.  It’s a fun flick and one we think you’d enjoy.

“Well, it’s rather brutal here. Right now we are advising all our clients to put everything they’ve got into canned food and shotguns.”
