Frozen (recommended by reader Matt of generaltomfoolery.com)

Release Date: 2/7/2010 – Rated R

Plot Summary:   Joe, Dan and Dan’s girlfriend Parker are at a ski resort having a good time.  After a few runs down the hill they try to squeeze in one more before the place closes for the week.  They convince the guy running the chair lift to let them go one more time even though the resort is closed and there is no one else on the mountain.  A few minutes after sending them up the guy gets called away, but tells his replacement that there are 3 more people up there.  Another group of three comes down the mountain and leaves.  Figuring that those people where the group the chair lift operator was talking about the new guy shuts down the lift.  Our group isn’t too worried at first, as this happened once today already.  It isn’t until all of the lights are turned off that they begin to panic.  The resort is closed for the next five days: they face a  fifty foot drop, freezing temperatures and other unseen dangers on the ground, the group must decide what to do before they freeze to death. (The group’s choices are the focal point and most interesting part of this movie, so we will keep this spoiler free and end this here.)

Alex’s Thoughts:  Not an awful movie, but not an orignal concept – we’ve seen something like  this movie before.  There are a few really good surprise moments here and there but the suspense comes from they trying to escape a  situation that seems unescapable.  The acting is kind of blah at first, gets better in the middle, then I think really dies off near the end.  I just didn’t think they portrayed the terrified aspect of it all very well.  Again, not bad, but not stellar either.

Tim’s Thoughts:I HATED this movie. It starts off very smug and self-aware, and then changes gears into typical and predictable. I hated 2 out of the 3 main characters, and I am going to lobby for this movie to be shown in science classes to prove Darwinism. I think the movie would have been better if it were 45 minutes long, and had a completely different setup. I think it would have been much more interesting if there was a bit of malice behind them being stranded, a prank gone wrong, and then we watch the horrible consequences, but alas we get what seems like hours of unnecessary dialogue, and boring excessive shots from different angles. I had no problem with the acting, I felt like they played the hand they were dealt.  I know this director is supposed to be an up and comer, but I am not impressed so far. Frozen conceptually is a good idea, but the details were not, and the execution was lacking. BORING!

Final Thoughts: This movie was better the first time we saw it, when it was called Open Water.  It is essentially the same concept with a different location, oh and it’s boring as hell.
