MacGruber

Release Date: 5/21/2010 – Rated R

Starring: Will Forte (Beerfest), Kristen Wiig (Adventureland)

Plot Summary: Retired special operative MacGruber is called out of retirement to stop his arch nemesis Dieter Von Cunth from using a stolen nuclear warhead to destroy Washington D.C.. MacGruber is thought dead after an assassination attempt at his wedding by Cunth. He then assembles the greatest team of heroes America has ever seen only to blow them up. His is forced to then team up with Agent Piper and his dead wife’s best friend Vicki Saint Elmo. Together they rip throats and leave nasty surprises in Cunth’s bathrooms.  A spoof of not only MacGyver, but action movies as a genre, MacGruber is willing to do anything, and I mean ANYTHING to get revenge and stop Cunth’s Master plan.

Alex’s Thoughts:  While not a huge fan of the current SNL weekly offerings, I do like the MacGruber sketches; but I loved this movie.  I can’t believe it got such awful reviews, that’s why I didn’t see it until it was released on DVD.  There a so many lough-out-loud scenes and this is just a great hour and a half of your life.  While not one of my favorite SNL movies(those being Blues Brothers Wayne’s World), it certainly isn’t near the bottom of the list with turds like Night at the Roxbury or Superstar

Tim’s Thoughts: I mostly agree with Alex, (I loved Night at the Roxbury) and also could not understand why it got such horrible reviews. This one is perfect for what it is, crude, kind of shocking and really funny. The cast is great, it’s well paced, and really consistent. I do watch SNL with my wife every week, and I have seen every MacGruber sketch, Hulu them if you haven’t had the pleasure, and the movie will be that much better. So lock the kids up, and sit down with some popcorn and be ready to laugh your ass off.

Final Thoughts: Don’t be put off by the reviews (5.6/10 on IMDB & 5.2/10 on Rotten Tomatoes).  It’s a really funny movie, not a smart movie, just funny. See it, and we dare you not to laugh; and remember to put the celery in big end first.
