The Onion Movie

Release Date: 6/3/2008 (Direct to DVD) – Not Rated

Starring: Sarah McElligott (Hot Tub Time Machine), Steven Segal (Machete)

Plot Summary:  America’s Finest News Source: The Onion, is being bought out by Globaltetrahedron. A Megacorporation that is “selling out” the integrity of the news channel, and lead anchor Norm Archer won’t stand for it. This is pretty much the plot as the movie encapsulates a mix of Onion headlines brought to life and SNLesque sketches and commercials.

Alex’s Thoughts:  I thought there were some funny parts, but also some really dumb parts as well.  This movie was made in 2003 and sat on a shelf for 5 years; watching this kind of shows why, it’s not great and the jokes seem dated.  I’d rather use the hour and a half reading theonion.com or a collection of articles in book form.

Tim’s Thoughts:I thought that for the most part The Onion Movie captures the spirit of the Newspaper. Really funny at parts and pretty consistently offensive,(I had a friend who surprised me by being offended at the “all blacks love taffy”) I recommend this movie, but there are better ones of this type. Really a must for Onion fans such as myself, and a great cameo by Steven Segal. Not a complete movie, but good for a party viewing, and I have watched it quite a few  times. Theonion.com is WAAAAYYY funnier.

Final Thoughts: Kentucky Fried Movie is better, but this one is pretty good. Not hilarious the entire way through, but the good parts are really funny.
