Bubba Ho-Tep

Release Date: 6/9/2002 – Rated PG-13

Starring: Bruce Campbell (Army of Darkness), Ossie Davis (Joe Versus the Volcano)

Plot Summary:  Elvis is alive and relatively well  in an East Texas nursing home just waiting to die.  That is until the residents of the nursing home begin having their souls stolen by an ancient mummy.  You see, the real Elvis got tired of all the fame and expectations that come along with that, so he switched places with an Elvis impersonator in the mid 1970’s and has ended up here, with no real proof of who he is.  Elvis along with his friend, John F. Kennedy (who is a black man, but claims he was dyed that way because that is just how sneaky the government is) must protect their friends from having their souls stolen through their butt holes by this cowboy hat wearing terror.

Alex’s Thoughts:  As crazy and insane as the plot sounds, it makes for a very entertaining movie.  Bruce Campbell is terrific as always, and though not someone I would think of as Elvis off the top of my head, does a good job with the role and delivers tons of great one liners.  If you’re a Campbell fan you should check this out, as it’s better than most of his recent work.  “Hail to the King, baby” has never been more appropriate.

Tim’s Thoughts: I got this movie from my Dad, who is also a Bruce Campbell fan, and I fell in love with it right away. It’s such a unique story and I found it to be better than I thought it would. Campbell is clearly having fun and it’s contagious. This movie was made for just over half a million, and the make-up was done at cost as a favor to the director, also while Elvis is the main character there is no Elvis music in the entire film.  Bubba was made for the love of it, and it shows. This is a MUST for Bruce Campbell fans, and casual fans of the strange should enjoy this also, but they are probably Campbell fans…..

Final Thoughts: Do you need to idolize Bruce Campbell like we do to enjoy this movie? No, you don’t.  It’s able to stand alone on its own creative storyline and writing, but the whole Bruce Campbell thing helps.  See it, love it.

Alex Rates This Movie 7/10
